return

I haven't been on here in awhile.  It has been a crazy summer.  I spent a good two weeks worrying about my daughter in the path of the hurricanes.  Thankfully, she and Atticus, her cat did not even have to evacuate.  I had a lot of rain.  A lot of rain like around 21 inches, but I consider my house a fort from flooding.  I will not flood.  I sit on one of the high spots in my town.  But my little guys did not know that.  I had to push them out in the yard and most of that time the water was up to Duncan's belly.  Jock loved it because there were crawdads floating around in that water and he could chase them.  Honey absolutely hated it and had to literally be shoved out the door.  She hates rain.  She hates heat.  She is so spoiled.  Well needless to say, I had to do a lot of cleaning from Duncan. He did his business in the kitchen.  I really couldn't blame him since the water was so high for him.  At least after I shoved Honey out the door, she would do her business outside.

But those on the Gulf Coast from Cameron, Louisiana to Corpus Christi did not fare that well.  I feel so sorry for those in those areas.  Houston got all the attention, but the entire Gulf Coast was in the same boat.  I could name 100 communities that were devastated by over 80 inches of rain.  Some had to literally swim out in Brazoria when the levy was breached.  And there was only a few minutes warning.  It will take the Gulf coast a decade to recover and hopefully lessons will be learned.  But Texas will clean up and move on.  We always do.

Now, in 2011, I did not consider my house a fort.  Fire was everywhere.  We have 254 counties in Texas and at any given time, 252 were on fire.  Fire does not discriminate and there is no way to get away from it nor build to survive it.  With water, if you get a warning, many times you can get away.  Not so with fire.  And neither fire nor water discriminates between rich and poor.  All were in it together in Texas Gulf Coast this year and in 2011.  We have learned we have to take care of each other.  If we don't, there is no one to do it.  We can't count on the federal government.  We can count on each other.  We proved that.
